12 MARCH 2018: It is perhaps appropriate that the name ‘Najd’ should mean ‘plateau’ in Arabic. Having proved her credentials in the dynamic environment of the FAST offices on Riyadh’s northern outskirts, Najd Al Sahli, a pivotal team player, has recently been promoted to Communications Manager and Deputy Capacity Manager. She is seen as a role model for ambitious, aspiring Saudi females.
“Ninety nine per cent of my colleagues are male, so I try my best to work hard in this competitive environment,” says Al Sahli.
There is no such thing as a typical day in Al Sahli’s professional life. As the communications liaison point between the various project management group leaders and departments at FAST, she must think on her feet in a multinational, multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.
“We are the interface bringing all the partners together,” she says of the FAST communications and PR department. “I’m always diplomatic with the different partners, who all have different ways of working. I need to fully understand the context in which FAST is working on the Metro, and reach out and build relationships with the other two consortia [BACS and ANM].”
Al Sahli, who is as equally comfortable conversing in English and French as her native language, also plays a valuable community and stakeholder outreach role.
